This year aims to start preparing students for the rigours of Later Years English. This includes a closer analysis of all texts (including novels, newspaper articles, films, online texts, audio-visual texts, poetry and short stories) and their unique structures, language use and other devices used to engage their intended audiences. This improvement in skills and content will culminate in an end-of-year examination which provides the students with a sense of what is expected of them in the next few years in English. In order to better understand how writers create and workshop their writing, students are also required to craft their own pieces of work. In Year 9 English, this includes text response writing, persuasive writing on a given issue, creative writing and poetry writing (sonnets). This range of genres allows students an insight into the broad scope of language use that is available to writers and the way they manipulate language (and sometimes create new words or forms of words in order to describe or compare an idea) to reach an intended audience and achieve a specific purpose. In addition to this, students are also given the opportunity to communicate their ideas through formal and informal speaking and listening experiences. Discussions, debates, speeches and presentations are just some of the methods through which students demonstrate their ability to convey abstract and complex ideas to an audience with clarity and purpose. They are also required to actively listen to a variety of audio and oral texts in order to evaluate the effectiveness of these presentations and to utilise what they learn from these in their own communications.
